Your Royal Highness Princess Basma bint Talal
Excellencies
Ladies and Gentlemen,
On behalf of the United Nations in Jordan I am happy to welcome you today to the International Volunteer Day with the slogan “Hand in Hand for a Better Life”.
Your Excellency Suhair Al Ali, Minister of Planning and International Cooperation,
Distinguished participants,
Friends and Colleagues,
It is a great pleasure for me to welcome you all to Jordan and I am delighted to officially open the Global UNDP Community of Practitioner’s Meeting on Aid Effectiveness.
Tuesday marks United Nations Day all over the world. In the Kingdom, and through its 12 agencies here, the UN has been working with the people of Jordan and has supported the Jordanian Government’s requests for support to identified challenges and needs.
The UN continues to actively support the development process in Jordan, in particular, in such areas as poverty reduction, food security, social sector development, environment, education, health, protection and promoting good governance. Its work focuses on the economic and social advancement of people, and respect for human rights.
As we come together to celebrate International Women’s Day, we once again shed light on the fundamental issues of women’s rights, equality and advancement. However, as we look back at past achievements and set the course for future ones, we must remember that women’s rights, equality and empowerment should not be an end but a means and a vital component in any country’s growth and development.
