The United Nations in cooperation with development partners has established three complementary initiatives to facilitate the achievement of the MDGs at the global, regional, and national level.

The first initiative, the Millennium Project, is a research initiative led by Professor Jeffrey Sachs under the guidance of the Secretary General and UNDPs Administrator, including a UN Expert Group, an International advisory panel, and 10 Task Forces.

The Millennium Development Goals Report is an effort to oversee comprehensive global and national reporting and monitoring of progress at the global level. It is issued on an annual basis and is developed with data compiled by an Inter-Agency and Expert Group on MDG Indicators and the efforts are led by the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations Secretariat, in response to the wishes of the General Assembly for periodic assessment of progress towards the MDGs. In addition to this global report, the United Nations also issues regional reports, national reports, and in some countries including Jordan, MDG reports at the local level such as within governorates.

The third initiative towards the achievement of the MDGs is the Global Millennium Campaign. The Millenium Campaign is a special UN inter-agency initiative aimed at building awareness and creating new coalitions for action across North and South for development generally and the MDGs in particular. In essence, it aims to support citizens’ efforts to hold their governments accountable towards the achievement of the MDGs. A number of activities are held to engage citizens and governments including Stand Up Against Poverty day, which is marked every year in October across the world.
