Y-Peer Jordan Involvement in Communities

In continuation to the collaboration with ZIKRA initiative in Ghour Al Mazra’a –100Km from Amman - 16 members of Y-PEER Jordan hit the road to Al- Ghour to Connect with local community and learn traditional crafts and skills such as how to make Kohol (eyeliner), Henna drawings, Basket Weaving, Kuffieh tassels, Ornaments from recycled material such as flower designs, frames, and much more.

The Y-PEER’s participated also in Tomato picking and cooked their own “Gallayet bandora” (a very traditional tomato dish in Jordan) and made their own Shraq Bread with the sound of traditional Jordanian music played by locals to add a unique flavor to the magical site over the surrounding farms.

Zikra Initiative has created a form of tourism which changes existing social systems and progresses towards more egalitarian, inclusive societies. Zikra's exchange tourism concept leads to equity by helping marginalized rural communities rediscover their strength and by taking economically powerful urban communities out of their protective bubble. Both parties engage in a two-way equal exchange in which each side learns and contributes. The tourism revenue is invested in the marginalized communities' economic development, thus narrowing the gap further.
This is not the first time for the Y-PEER’s to get involved with Ghour Al Mazra’a community as in 2010 peer education sessions took place for 30 young girls aged 13-18 years old about their reproductive health and the physical &psychological changes for adolescents .

Also Ghour Al Mazra’a was one of the targeted areas during 10 days of activism campaign were the interactive play (Haretna – our neighborhood) was shown for families.

The Y-PEER involvement in Ghour Al Mazra’a will continue in 2011 and this Bandora/Tomato Day was just the beginning of a fruitful year!
